CO2 Laser Resurfacing
Facial resurfacing with CO2 laser is one of the most advanced aesthetic procedures currently available, using state-of-the-art fractional laser technology from Syneron – considered the highest-performing CO2 system in the world.
The device uses super/ultra-pulse technology, which allows for rapid and controlled heat application to the skin, ensuring remarkable results even after the first session, a high degree of safety, and reduced recovery time. It is indicated for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, treating scars (including post-acne scars), reducing pigment spots, and evening out skin texture.
The procedure is performed in a specialized clinical setting, with local or general anesthesia, depending on complexity, and is suitable for patients of all ages.
How is the procedure performed, and what equipment do we use?
01. How is the procedure performed, and what equipment do we use
For this procedure, we use a CO2 laser from Syneron CO2RE, the most advanced Co2 laser system in the world. CO2RE, the latest fractional laser technology. This laser is one of the few types of lasers in the world that uses super/ultra-pulse technology. Thus, heat is applied much faster to the skin, increasing the safety of the procedure and decreasing recovery time. CO2RE is the ideal way to rejuvenate the face, increase skin firmness, and correct all your skin’s imperfections. With the new CO2RE, the results are remarkable even after the first session! This procedure is performed in collaboration with the Dermavision Clinic in Cluj-Napoca.
Laser resurfacing procedures are usually performed in an outpatient dermatology center or a surgical clinic. We typically use local anesthesia with an anesthetic cream to maintain patient comfort during the procedure. For a more extensive laser resurfacing treatment, your surgeon may prefer to use general anesthesia. In this case, you may be admitted to the hospital for a short stay.
Before the treatment begins, you will have protective eyewear to protect your eyes throughout the procedure. During the procedure, the surgeon carefully runs the activated laser back and forth over the skin to vaporize the damaged upper layers with high precision. When imperfections are deep, your surgeon may recommend that the resurfacing be performed in two or more stages. As new cells form during the healing process, a smoother, tighter, and younger skin surface will appear. The price starts from 500 euros per treatment.
02. Possible concomitant procedures.
Often, people who undergo laser resurfacing treatment choose to undergo other facial rejuvenation procedures at the same time, such as a facelift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery. Inform your surgeon if you plan to undergo any other cosmetic procedures in the future.
03. Other options
Precision and predictability are the major advantages of this procedure. However, laser resurfacing is not the only method that plastic surgeons use to resurface facial skin. Alternative facial therapies include:
Topical treatment with Tretinoin (Retin-A): an easy skin resurfacing treatment that involves the regular application of a cream enriched with vitamin A.
Dermabrasion: a more aggressive method that targets the surface layer of dead skin cells with a motorized brush.
Chemical peel: a rejuvenation method in which a chemical solution is applied to remove the upper layers of the skin, allowing a new, fresh layer to emerge.
Lighter resurfacing options offer shorter recovery times. However, they may need to be repeated several times to achieve results comparable to those obtained with laser resurfacing. Your plastic surgeon will advise you if one of these methods might be a better option for you.
04. Recovery
After the procedure itself is completed, your surgeon will protect your healing skin with either a bandage or a protective ointment, depending on your needs. Bandages will need to be changed periodically for the first 10 days. If your doctor uses protective ointment, you will be given an ointment to use at home during the first week of healing.
You may experience mild to moderate swelling; however, ice packs and medications prescribed by your surgeon can help you stay comfortable.
Although the healing process varies, you can expect the recovery to follow this general timeline:
First 3 weeks:
The skin will be pink to red in color. Redness is a positive sign that the healing process is progressing and a new layer of collagen is being laid down.
You can safely apply makeup as a care agent after about two weeks.
Depending on how you feel, you may be able to return to work.
You will start to feel much more comfortable.
After one month:
The redness will begin to fade, and you will begin to appreciate the improved appearance.
It is important to remember that the redness will gradually fade. Although the coloring will continue to decrease with each passing week, some pink spots may remain for 3 to 4 months.
In the months following treatment, it is essential to protect your face from the sun until all pigmentation has returned to normal. If you must be in the sun, apply a strong sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher and cover your face with a visor or wide-brimmed hat. You should also wear good quality sunglasses that have filters to block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. If sun-related pigmentation occurs, your plastic surgeon will suggest using a bleaching cream to eliminate this pigmentation.
05. What should I know about the result I can achieve?
If you are like most patients, you will notice a significant improvement in skin tone and texture. Many patients report that their fresh, younger-looking complexion makes them feel more confident at work and in social situations.
You should know that although your results will be long-lasting, the aging process will continue. Following treatment, natural facial movements will eventually cause you to redevelop expression lines. Using sun protection methods and a skin care regimen recommended by your surgeon will help you maintain your results. However, some patients decide to repeat the treatment after a few years to restore their rejuvenated appearance.
06. How long will I continue post-procedure visits to the plastic surgeon?
After the initial healing period, you will return to your plastic surgeon’s office for a post-operative monitoring visit so that your healing and progress can be evaluated. In the following months, your surgeon may ask you to return for periodic checkups. It is important to keep these appointments so that your doctor can evaluate your long-term results and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
What are the benefits of laser resurfacing?
Patients of all ages can benefit from laser skin resurfacing, also called a “laser peel.” This treatment improves a variety of conditions, including:
- Fine lines, especially around the eyes
- Vertical lines around the mouth
- Scars caused by surgery or accident, as well as superficial scars such as those caused by acne
- Areas of uneven pigmentation, such as age spots and sunspots
- Lines and spots on the cheeks caused by sun damage
Potential risks and complications
Each year, thousands of men and women undergo laser resurfacing treatments and do not experience major complications. However, it is important to be informed about the risks as well as the benefits of these procedures.
One of the most important parts of your examination is the discussion you have with your surgeon about the possible complications of laser resurfacing. In addition, listen carefully to what your surgeon tells you, and make sure you have asked the questions you have about the safety of the procedure.
A few of the possible complications after laser resurfacing:
hyperpigmentation or asymmetrical depigmentation
By carefully following the surgeon’s advice and instructions, both before and after surgery, you can do your part to minimize some of the risks.
What is the cost of laser resurfacing?
From €500 / treatment
The costs mentioned are estimates, and they may vary depending on the surgical technique chosen, the complexity of the case, as well as any additional procedures or investigations required.
A detailed final cost can only be established following a medical consultation, in which the patient’s clinical situation will be assessed and the individualized therapeutic plan will be established. For a personalized estimate, we recommend scheduling a consultation.
