Female Genital Surgery
Genital surgery is a branch of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery that aims to modify the appearance or functionality of the genital organs, contributing both to increased self-confidence and to improving the quality of intimate life. In the case of women, this type of intervention is often associated with the expression “designer vaginas” and includes a variety of procedures adapted to the physical and emotional needs of patients.
The growing interest in genital surgery reflects a profound shift in how women claim autonomy over their own bodies. The desire to align physical appearance with self-image, to regain confidence after childbirth, trauma, or simply for personal aesthetic reasons, has transformed these interventions into a valid and accepted option.
For many patients, genital surgery is not about conforming to standards, but about comfort, freedom, and rediscovering their own femininity. With a correct approach, medical information, and support from empathetic specialists, this type of surgery can become a real resource for physical and emotional well-being.
Genital Surgery - Main Procedures
Among the most requested procedures are labioplasty – reduction of the size of the labia – and vaginoplasty, which aims to narrow the vaginal canal, sometimes with benefits for sexual function. Other popular procedures include liposuction in the mons pubis area, fat injections to restore volume and a youthful appearance to the labia or pubic region, as well as clitoral circumcision, an aesthetic intervention that can increase sensitivity in this area.
Additionally, hymen reconstruction, laser therapy for smoothing labial skin, and hair transplantation in cases of pubic hypotrichosis are interventions that respond to either aesthetic needs or cultural considerations. Regardless of motivation, genital surgery has as its main objective harmonizing the perception of one’s own body with physical reality, bringing benefits to emotional, sexual, and social well-being.
01. Labial Reduction
Labial reduction includes a series of operations designed to reduce the size and degree of protrusion of the labia minora or “inner lips” of the vagina. The most common reason women request this operation is because the labia are perceived as being too large and unsightly. A small number of women state that the large size of the labia makes them visible in tight clothing, or when exercising, or makes cycling uncomfortable. Others experience problems with penetration.
The procedure is relatively simple, excising an area of the labia minora using multiple incisions; this can be performed under local anesthesia. Careful placement of the scar is important to prevent painful scarring of the labial edges.
02. Vaginal Plasty
Vaginal tightening operations are requested by some women who feel that their vagina has become lax after childbirth or with age. As a result, they claim that sexual intercourse is less satisfying for them or their partner. The procedure can be a simple one that results in placing sutures at the introitus (vaginal opening) or may involve excision of excess vaginal mucosa along with tightening of the posterior vaginal wall muscles.
The first procedure is not widely used. The second procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and used more frequently by gynecologists. Bowel perforation is one of the most serious complications that can occur.
Vaginal tightening can be achieved through a non-surgical CO2 laser technique that induces small burn points in the vaginal mucosa which tighten through healing and scarring. The effect is not as dramatic as with the surgical technique.
03. Liposuction or "Liposculpture"
Liposuction or “liposculpture” of the mons pubis can be an isolated procedure or performed in combination with abdominal or thigh liposuction. The appearance of the mons pubis is enhanced by improving its definition. In contrast, fat injections into the mons pubis or labia majora highlight these structures, giving them a more youthful appearance.
Clitoral circumcision or removal of the skin fold around the clitoris is done to expose the clitoris and make it more sensitive. However, there is little information regarding outcomes other than anecdotal.
How can I help make genital organ surgery a success?
Maintaining a state of health as good as possible and a weight appropriate to your age and height will help with a quick recovery, without complications. If you smoke, quit smoking six weeks before the operation; this will help with healing and reduce the chances of complications.
You should not remove/shave hair from the vicinity of the areas where the cuts will be placed on the skin. Maintaining strict hygiene will help reduce the risk of infection.
