If you are among the patients concerned about this topic, continue reading. We have prepared some useful information that we hope will answer all your questions and help you make a decision.

Recommended waiting time after breast augmentation with breast implants

Generally, it is recommended to wait at least 3 months, preferably 6 months or even longer, before attempting to conceive a child if you have undergone a breast augmentation procedure. This interval is necessary to allow your body to heal completely after surgery, but also to give your body the time needed to prepare to cope with the changes that occur during pregnancy, such as breast volume increase and hormonal changes.[2]

If you are not willing to wait these few months, consider the possibility of postponing the surgical procedure until after the birth of the child and the end of the breastfeeding period. However, keep in mind that even in this case it is recommended to wait 6 months after birth or, as the case may be, at least 3 months after you have stopped breastfeeding.[3]

If you do happen to become pregnant immediately after surgery, inform both your surgeon and your gynecologist so they can monitor you carefully throughout the pregnancy.[2]

Impact of pregnancy on breast implants

Pregnancy will not affect breast implants in any way – they are designed to have a high degree of resistance to rupture or damage. However, the changes that occur in breast tissue during pregnancy, combined with weight gain, may cause your breasts to sag or change shape. This means you may notice a change in the appearance of your bust even with implants.[2]

Don’t worry! If you are not satisfied with how your breasts look after birth and breastfeeding, this can be easily corrected. Depending on the aspects that displease you, there are several procedures we could recommend, including breast lift surgery or even breast implant replacement.

Another possibility would be to resort to a breast reduction, in case you have discovered that the current size of your breasts is not the right one.

Impact of breast implants on breastfeeding

Breast augmentation surgery with breast implants does not necessarily affect the ability to breastfeed, but it can make this process more difficult due to changes made to the breasts and surgical scars. For example, if an incision is made at the level of the areolas (the darker part of the breasts) or nipples during surgery, some of the milk ducts could be cut, which could affect milk production. Also, positioning implants under the glandular tissue (and above the pectoral muscle) could affect the amount of milk you can produce. Another risk associated with breast augmentation procedure is damage to the nerves around the nipples, which could affect the ability to feel the baby sucking and cause breastfeeding difficulties.

Regarding the safety of breastfeeding for the child after breast augmentation with breast implants, there is no evidence that this would affect the baby’s health in any way.[2]

If you plan to become pregnant in the future and breastfeed and are about to undergo breast augmentation surgery, mention this to your surgeon so they can take this into account when deciding where to make incisions and where to place the implant.

How to prepare for pregnancy after breast augmentation with breast implants

If you have undergone breast augmentation surgery with breast implants, it is advisable to discuss with your doctor before trying to become pregnant. During the medical consultation, they will evaluate your general health status and ensure that the breast implants are in good condition. This includes examining the breasts to detect any changes or signs of implant-related problems, such as capsular contracture or implant rupture.[1] They will also inform you about possible changes to the breasts and breast implants that may occur during pregnancy and the long-term effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding on breast shape and appearance.

In conclusion, although breast implants do not affect your ability to become pregnant in any way, it is advisable to wait approximately 6 months before doing so, to give your body the time needed to recover completely after the procedure.
