Benefits and indications for each

In such situations, especially if other types of treatments have not achieved the desired results, a solution that more and more people are turning to is facial lifting, a very effective surgical procedure when it comes to counteracting the effects of time and gravity and restoring a youthful appearance to our face.[6][4]

The first thing you will discover when trying to obtain more information about this procedure is that there are several types of facial lifting. How do you know which one is right for you? We have prepared some information about the most sought-after types of facial lifting, their benefits and indications, so you can make the right decision.

Standard facial lifting

This is the main type of facial lifting that most people think of when they decide it’s time to turn to plastic surgery to improve their facial appearance. Such a procedure focuses on the lower two-thirds of the face (if intervention in the area above the eyes is desired, other procedures are necessary) and, for the best results, is often combined with a neck lift.[6]

The techniques used may vary from case to case, depending on several criteria (including desired results and the number of procedures performed at the same time), but typically, a traditional facial lift involves making incisions behind the hairline, starting near the temples and around the front of the ear, hidden in natural folds, lifting and repositioning facial tissues, and removing excess skin.[4]

Although it cannot completely change a person’s appearance or stop the aging process, a standard lift can offer dramatic results:

Tightens and lifts sagging skin, helping to smooth deep folds;

Restores the natural youthful contour of the face and neck;

Helps you get rid of that unpleasant “jowl” appearance.[3]

Possible indications for a standard facial lift are:

Loss of skin elasticity and sagging;

Deepening of nasolabial folds (those folds between the nose and corner of the mouth);

Resorption of facial fat deposits or their displacement;

Sagging skin or accumulation of fat deposits in the neck area.[1]

Mini facial lift

Also known as a “weekend lift,” this type of facial lift focuses on the middle area of the face, being recommended for patients who do not yet show major signs of aging and want to take action before these become more pronounced and require more complex interventions.

It is a quick procedure, less invasive than traditional facial lifting. Unlike this, mini facial lifting allows the surgeon to lift and tighten deep facial tissues through shorter incisions, usually located along the hairline above each ear or in the natural folds around the ear.

Even though the results will not be as dramatic as those obtained from a standard lift, the effect of the procedure on your face will be evident: that “tired” look that bothers you every time you look in the mirror will disappear completely. Other benefits of this type of facial lift are:

Shorter recovery time;

Natural-looking results (skin and facial tissues are pulled up, not sideways);

Small scars;

Low risk of complications.[4][2]

Midface facial lifting

This type of facial lift focuses on improving the appearance of the middle area of the face, that between the upper lip and lower eyelid. For this reason, it is also known as a cheek lift.

The main indications for this procedure are:

Descent of malar fat pads and deepening of nasolabial folds;

Atrophy of facial fat deposits;

Appearance of fat bags under the eyes.

Also, midface facial lifting can be performed in combination with a general face or neck lift, when the skin is very sagging, especially if the reason is significant weight loss.
To perform this procedure, the surgeon will make two small incisions along the hairline, then tighten the muscles and redistribute fat deposits to smooth folds and wrinkles, remove excess skin, and restore volume to the area around the eyes and cheeks.

Midface facial lifting does not target the chin or forehead area, so if there are aspects that displease you at their level, it is advisable to consider other surgical procedures as well. However, if you do not consider interventions in the jaw or forehead area necessary, a midface facial lift can be the perfect solution to achieve a younger appearance.[5][7]

There are several types of facial lifting, and choosing the right one for you depends on the results you want to achieve, as well as other factors. The simplest method to find out if you need a traditional facial lift, a mini facial lift, a midface facial lift, or perhaps another type of lift, combined or not with other procedures, is to schedule a consultation. Dr. Olimpiu Hârceagă will provide you with all the necessary information and help you make the right decision.

Bibliography:

“Facelift Surgery” American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 2020.
