By this, we are not only referring to their size or filling, the main aspects that our patients think about when it comes to choosing implants, but also to their shape. From this point of view, there are two options: anatomical implants or round implants. You will find out in the article below what the characteristics of each of these two types are and based on what criteria the most suitable shape is chosen for each patient. <\/p>\n\n

Anatomical implant<\/h2>\n\n

As the name suggests, the main characteristic of the anatomical implant is the natural appearance it gives to the breasts. This is possible due to their teardrop or pear shape (rounder at the bottom and thinner at the top). <\/p>\n\n

Initially, anatomical implants were created for those patients who needed a breast reconstruction surgery<\/a>, to offer them an implant option that mimics the natural shape of most breasts. Currently, however, they are also used in cosmetic augmentation procedures and are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes.[4] Usually, the filling is represented by ultra-cohesive silicone gel and they have a textured surface, to prevent them from rotating and to avoid the unsightly, crooked appearance that the breast would have if this were to happen.[2] The textured surface promotes the formation of scar tissue to keep the implant in place and greatly reduces the risk of rotation.[4]<\/p>\n\n

This type of implant also has some disadvantages, including a higher price compared to round implants and the fact that it requires a longer incision. Another aspect that should be mentioned is that, although they have a more natural appearance, they do not “feel” as natural.[3][4]<\/p>\n\n

Round implant <\/h2>\n\n

The round implant is the best-known type of implant, partly due to the fact that, at one point, it was the only option available in terms of shape. It is used if a more pronounced effect is desired, especially when highlighting the upper part of the breasts. <\/p>\n\n

From a compositional point of view, a round implant can contain silicone gel or saline. Its surface can be smooth or textured; due to the round shape, the risk of rotation and, implicitly, of breast deformation is not a concern. Another advantage of this type of implant is that it “feels” more natural than an anatomical one.[2]<\/p>\n\n

There are four different types of round breast implants, from those with low projection to those with high profile, and you can opt for various sizes, either the same for each breast, or a different one for each breast, depending on the particularities of each case.[3][2]<\/p>\n\n

In the “disadvantages” chapter, we can mention that, depending on the patient’s constitution, a natural appearance of the breasts can be difficult to obtain. Also, if you opt for implants with a smooth surface, it may take a few months for them to “settle” in the final position.[1]<\/p>\n\n

How do you choose the right shape?<\/h2>\n\n

Choosing the right shape of breast implant is a decision that takes into account several criteria: <\/p>\n\n
